Y5 welcome back.
English- Mrs McQueen Oliver reads to us every day. She like to read to us even in wet play!
For term 1 we are reading Anglo Saxon Boy related to our History topic. A brief out idea about the book - Magnus is the son of Harold Godwinson, lord of the Southern Saxons and ruthlessly ambitious claimant to the throne of England. Overnight, Magnus finds himself cast centre-stage in the blood-soaked family feud that led to one of history’s most famous battles.
This is the family tragedy behind 1066: live it with Magnus, as the wolves of history close in on his Anglo-Saxon boyhood.
Term 2 we are reading Curiosity Mars Rover this is to support our science learning.
Term 3 we are reading King of the Clouds by Michael Morpurgo. This is to enhance the topic of Mountains a focus for Geography.
Term 4 we are reading Arthur and The Golden Rope. This book enhances our History learning this term - Vikings.
A taster of the text...
Imagine a vault so cavernous that it could contain all the world's greatest treasures and relics, from mummified remains of ancient monarchs to glistening swords brandished by legendary warriors. Who could be in charge of such a vault and how did he come into possession of such a unique collection? Who is...Professor Brownstone?
Term 5 we are reading Clockwork by Philip Pullman.
The story is set in 'the olden days’ in the small German town of Glockenheim. There are three main characters, Karl – an apprentice clockmaker; Gretl - the kindly daughter of a local innkeeper; and Fritz, a local writer.
Karl is the first clockmaker’s apprentice in memory who hasn’t completed a new figure for the town’s clock. The night before the grand unveiling of the figure, (which will not happen now) the townspeople gather in the local inn to listen to Fritz tell them stories. The stories begin to come true and this scares many of the townspeople as evil descends on the town. The story twists and turns through time with Karl and Gretl at its centre.
We are very grateful to Mr Jones who visited from Five Acres secondary school and has generously loaned us a whole class set of the hilarious Wed Wabbit books which we are really enjoying reading together as a class every day during our reading for pleasure time.
Our history topic in Year 5 is Anglo Saxons. We have been doing lots of independent research to find out more about the lives of Anglo Saxons, including where they lived, the types of houses they built and the jobs they would do.
Year 5 have been focusing on their Art and DT skills, designing and creating jewellery inspired by the Anglo Saxon era - we looked at the use of spirals and used wire to re-create our designs, adding glass beads to enhance our creations. We also used our collage skills to re-create one of the most important historical artworks ever - the Bayeux Tapestry- re-telling the story of the Battle of Hastings which ultimately ended the Anglo Saxon's reign of the UK.
We have already had a special visit from Glos Rugby. Y5 learnt new some skills related to team work , agility and tag rugby.
As part of the Year 5 Internet safety curriculum, PC Darren visited the class and led sessions regarding how to be safe on line including reporting misuse correctly.
