Could you make one at home?
We are historians. We are using our skills to find out about the past. We used an archaeological dig to discover information about dinosaurs and fossils. We have been finding out about the famous palaeontologist, Mary Anning today. We looked very closely at some fossils using magnifying glasses and drew them.
We have looked at inventions. The topic for term 2 is Incredible Inventors. We will be starting our learning with bikes and who invented the Penny Farthing. The children explored inventors' corner. The children have used spanners , screwdrivers and allen keys to take a bike apart! They have been solving problems using numicon.
Art - We are artists.
We have been learning about colour and colour mixing in art. As part of this we have been finding out about the artist, Kandinsky. We looked at some of his artwork and have reproduced it using very specific primary and secondary colours.
We have also thought about everything that we have learnt about winter and painted some winter trees with an icy blue sky and snow. We used these pictures in our science to help us with our writing about seasons. This helped us be artists and scientists.
Term 5 art, we learnt to wool wrap and we will use this new skill in our next piece of art next week.
Paper weaving experience
We are scientists. We are looking at the seasons and learning about the changes throughout the year. We want on a leaf hunt to look at the changes in colours, shapes etc. What fun we had in the leaves.
During the year, Y1 has been learning about plants and changes. In term 5 and 6 they have been very active in the community garden and our school environment. They observed the progress and were the first class to harvest a crop.
In term 3 we investigated our senses. How well can we draw ourselves without our sense of sight?
We are musicians.
The whole of Year 1 I have been learning to play the violin. This is provided by an external specialist.

We are continuing to be Historians in term 4. The class are learning about Castles.

We visited Chepstow Castle to experience castles, what an exciting trip it was and the children produced amazing writing from the first hand experience.
In term 4 as Scientists, we have been looking at identifying and naming a variety of common animals, including fish, amphibians, reptiles, mammals and birds. We have frogs spawn in our classroom and are observing the changes that happen.
We are Geographers learning about The Arctic and Antarctica. We will read maps, look at the climate and animals who make these places their habitat.
In the first week of term 5 the children enjoyed finding out about polar animals in the Antarctic Research Station as well as talking about what they already knew. They have also looked at a map of the world and identified all the areas of land and sea.
Our Antarctic Research Station is very popular and the children have found out all sorts of interesting things about polar animals!
We have been out on a signs of spring walk and enjoyed listening to the birds in the sunshine. This is helping us learn about the seasons in Science.
We are Mathematicians. We have learnt to count in 5s and we are pretty good at it now after a tricky start!
We have also learnt about Scott of the Antarctic. We drew him with his team of explorers and his huskies. Ask your child about what happened to Sir Robert Falcon Scott and his team.
We have written riddles about them. Can you guess which is which?

A very exciting morning in Year 1. We had a mystery visitor who left us a parcel and a lot of glitter! Inside was a letter and a little bottle of magic potion! We have all written back to Maud and the mouse telling them about what might happen if we used the magic potion on different animals. Ask your child to tell you all about it!
