Learning
At Severnbanks we follow a text enhanced approach to our literacy/ topic work. Each term, the teacher selects a text that will support the learning. In year 2 we read and used...
The Blue Balloon is the text used for term 1. The children in year 2 were learning about flight.
Read together - The Blue Balloon
In term 2 the class read Q Pootle 5 and The Wright Brothers.
Q Pootle 5 thinks he knows what the problem is, in fact he is sure. The problem is that the rocket is broken, it needs a new rocket booster. But where on earth will this little alien find a rocket booster ? A green earthing comes along but he can’t help and neither can three birds. Perhaps Colin the Cat might be able to help – when he’s finished his dinner that is…
Term 3 we are reading. I wouldn’t want to be in the Great Fire of London and Toby and the Great Fire of London. This is to enhance our historical learning and knowledge.
Term 4 We are reading Titanic to help us discover what happened when the Titanic collided with an iceberg and began to sink!
Alice Carver is travelling aboard the incredible Titanic with her mother to make a new home in the United States. Meanwhile, William Alexander III is aboard the ship as part of a holiday with his wealthy family. The children will explore the many features of the Titanic with these characters as they meet and search for fun aboard the ship.
Children are learning about the great scientists and Inventors.
In term 5 the children were studying the topic of Pirates.
They used artefacts, pictures, stories, online sources and databases to find out about the past. They recognised that there were reasons why people acted as they had, asking questions such as: What was it like for people? What happened? How long ago? They used this knowledge to write reports, instructions for recipes on how to be a fierce pirate, character creation and story writing. They were lucky to have a Pirate Day!!
Term 6 the children are reading The Secret Garden.
We are authors
We created pieces of writing with expanded noun phrases...
Year two went to Bristol To enhance their learning in History and Science. The children travelled to Bristol Aerospace Museum for a workshop called The Right Stuff. They had the opportunity to carry out experiments exploring which materials were the best for building aeroplanes. They explored the exhibition, discovering how materials used to build aeroplanes have changed over time and looking at the materials that are used today. Fantasitc trip to build our learning and knowledge.
Science
In term 1, the children went on a material hunt around the school to begin their science unit of work on materials and their properties. They discussed why certain objects are made of particular materials. They also identified objects which were made of more than one material. We are scientists.
Oak Class were fantastic scientists on Tuesday afternoon. We helped solve a big problem. Tim could not decide which material would best absorb the drinks that his cat knocked over on the dining room table. Year 2 investigated which materials would be most absorbent. Kitchen towel, sponge, dish cloth, tea towel. We discovered the sponge was the most absorbent.
Art/ D and T
In Art the children learnt how to make different marks with charcoal. The children experimented with different ways to create different effects. They then had a go at expressing different vocabulary, such as ‘wrinkles’ using charcoal. We are artist.
Y2 have been learning how to flatten, smooth, roll shapes and make a range of marks in clay. They have also learnt how to make a basic pinch pot and join at least one clay shape onto the side of another using the scoring and slipping technique. By the end of this unit of Art they will have learnt to create a clay house tile that has recognisable features made by both impressing objects into the surface and by joining simple shapes.
