Promoting Equality, Diversity & Protected Characteristics
At Severnbanks Primary School, we are committed to creating an inclusive, respectful, and welcoming environment for all. We believe that every child has the right to feel safe, valued, and celebrated for who they are. Our approach to equality and diversity is embedded in our curriculum, ethos, and daily practice—ensuring that our pupils grow up with a strong sense of fairness, empathy, and respect for others.
We teach our children that:
-
There are no outsiders at Severnbanks
-
Everyone is different
-
We celebrate our differences
-
We are all equal in our differences
π What Are Protected Characteristics?
The Equality Act 2010 protects everyone in Britain from discrimination, harassment, and victimisation. It ensures that individuals are treated fairly and respectfully in all areas of life. Under the Act, there are nine Protected Characteristics:
-
Age
-
Disability
-
Gender reassignment
-
Race
-
Religion or belief
-
Marriage or civil partnership
-
Sex
-
Sexual orientation
-
Pregnancy and maternity

At Severnbanks, we actively promote these characteristics through our curriculum, assemblies, reading materials, and classroom discussions. We aim to foster a culture where children understand their rights and responsibilities and appreciate the richness of diversity in our community.
π« Where the Equality Act Applies
You are protected from discrimination:
-
In the workplace
-
When accessing education or healthcare
-
When using public services or transport
-
When visiting shops, restaurants, or cinemas
-
When joining clubs or associations
-
When interacting with local councils or government departments
π Promoting Equality Through Literature
We have invested in a wide selection of age-appropriate books across year groups that explore themes related to the Protected Characteristics. These books are read aloud in class or made available in the classroom libraries to encourage thoughtful, guided discussions. They help children explore identity, fairness, and inclusion in a safe and supportive way.
We also encourage children to ask questions, share their opinions, and engage in respectful dialogue. Our goal is to empower pupils to become compassionate, open-minded citizens who embrace diversity in all its forms.
