Early Language

Early language development encompasses a child's journey from babbling to forming sentences. It is crucial for overall cognitive, social, and literacy development. It's a process that begins from birth and is heavily influenced by the child's environment and interactions.

At Severnbanks, we believe that strong language skills are the foundation for learning, social interaction, and emotional wellbeing. Early language development begins long before children start formal education and plays a vital role in helping them understand the world around them, express their thoughts, and build relationships.

🌱 Why Early Language Matters

Language is more than just talking—it’s about listening, understanding, and communicating. Children with strong early language skills are more likely to:

  • Develop good reading and writing abilities

  • Engage confidently in classroom activities

  • Build friendships and navigate social situations

  • Express emotions and ask for help when needed

  • Access the full curriculum and achieve their potential

Delays in language development can affect learning, behaviour, and self-esteem. That’s why we prioritise early identification and support.

🧠 What Does Early Language Development Look Like?

From birth to age 5, children typically develop skills in:

  • Listening and attention – tuning in to sounds, stories, and conversations

  • Understanding language – following instructions and grasping meaning

  • Speaking and vocabulary – using words to express ideas, needs, and feelings

  • Social communication – taking turns, making eye contact, and using gestures

We support these skills through play, storytelling, songs, and structured activities across the EYFS and Key Stage 1.

🤝 How We Support Language Development

At Severnbanks, we:

  • Use high-quality interactions and modelling of language in every classroom

  • Provide targeted interventions for children with Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN)

  • Work closely with Speech and Language Therapists and other professionals

  • Encourage rich vocabulary through reading, role play, and discussion

  • Create language-rich environments that spark curiosity and conversation

👨‍👩‍👧 How Families Can Help at Home

Parents and carers play a vital role in supporting early language. You can help by:

  • Talking with your child throughout the day—describe what you’re doing, ask questions, and listen

  • Reading together regularly and discussing stories

  • Singing songs and rhymes to build rhythm and vocabulary

  • Playing games that involve turn-taking and conversation                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           Here are some films to watch for a great start in speech and language:
