Art and Design
Art and Design at Severnbanks Primary School
Our Art and Design curriculum is ambitious, inclusive, and designed to meet the needs of all learners while reflecting the community we serve. We follow the Kapow Primary scheme of work, which provides a coherent, well-sequenced curriculum that enables pupils to know more, remember more, and achieve well from their starting points.
Through Kapow’s spiral curriculum, pupils revisit key skills and concepts with increasing complexity, ensuring strong progression and readiness for the next stage of education. Lessons are practical, engaging, and encourage creativity, independence, and resilience. Pupils develop foundational skills in drawing, painting, sculpture, and craft, while building confidence in using subject-specific vocabulary and communicating ideas effectively.
Our curriculum promotes high expectations for all learners, including disadvantaged pupils and those with SEND, through scaffolding, targeted support, and formative assessment. Teachers monitor progress closely and take timely action to address gaps, ensuring every child achieves well.
Art and Design lessons foster critical thinking and cultural understanding by exploring artists and movements across history and cultures. Pupils learn to evaluate and analyse creative works, developing metacognitive skills and confidence in discussing their learning journey.
By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils will:
- Produce creative work, exploring and recording ideas.
- Be proficient in a range of art, craft, and design techniques.
- Evaluate and analyse using subject-specific language.
- Understand the historical and cultural significance of art.
- Meet national curriculum expectations and be ready for secondary education.
We celebrate creativity through displays, exhibitions, and extra-curricular opportunities, ensuring art has purpose and pupils take pride in their achievements.
